Collection: Matami Zanjeer

"Matami Zanjeer" is a type of Matamdari mourning that is found within the practice of the Shia branch of Islam commemorating Azadari-e-Hussain as, in which they perform Matam by whipping their body with sharp Zanjeer. Such a ritual is based on the firm belief, devotion and love of the Shia Muslims community, representing the empathy with the pain and martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as) and his followers on the day of Ashura in Karbala. It is a moving act of lament that honors and remembers this ancient and still-storied babe and embodies the timeless spiritual and historical weight that visits the Shia in religious practice today.
